Ductless Mini-Split Installation in Hampton Roads
Heating and cooling for the rooms your central system doesn’t reach — no ductwork required.
A ductless mini-split is a small heat pump with an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads mounted on the wall. It heats and cools a room without any ductwork, which makes it the cleanest fix for spaces a central system was never designed to serve.
RedVine Mechanical installs and services ductless mini-splits across Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and the rest of Hampton Roads. We'll look at the space, tell you whether a mini-split is the right answer, and size it properly for the room.
When a Mini-Split Makes Sense
- A room addition or converted garage that was never connected to the main system
- A sunroom or bonus room over the garage that is always too hot or too cold
- An older Norfolk or Portsmouth home with no ductwork or no room in the attic for it
- One room that never matches the rest of the house
- A workshop, home office, or in-law suite you want to control separately
How Ductless Systems Work
The outdoor unit connects to each indoor head through a small refrigerant line and a condensate line that pass through a hole a few inches wide. Each head has its own thermostat, so you can cool a hot bonus room without overcooling the rest of the house.
Because there is no ductwork, there is no duct leakage. That is a big reason mini-splits are efficient, and it makes them a good fit for older homes where running new ducts would mean opening walls and ceilings.
Installation
A good mini-split install comes down to sizing, placement, and a clean refrigerant connection. We size each head for the room it serves, place the indoor unit where the airflow actually reaches the space, route the lines neatly, and make sure the condensate drains where it should.
Every new full system installation comes with our two-year labor warranty.
- Single-zone systems for one room
- Multi-zone systems that run several rooms from one outdoor unit
- Heat pump mini-splits that heat in winter and cool in summer
Mini-Split Maintenance & Repair
Mini-splits need their filters cleaned every month or two and a professional cleaning of the indoor coil and blower wheel at least once a year. In our humid climate, skipping that cleaning is how mold and musty smells start. We service and repair ductless systems from all major manufacturers.

Ductless Mini-Splits: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a mini-split heat as well as cool?
Yes. Most ductless mini-splits are heat pumps, so they heat in winter and cool in summer, and Hampton Roads winters are well within what they handle.
How many rooms can one mini-split serve?
A single-zone system serves one room. A multi-zone system runs several indoor heads from one outdoor unit. We'll recommend the setup that fits your layout.
Do mini-splits need maintenance?
Yes. Clean or rinse the indoor filters every month or two, and have the indoor coil and blower wheel professionally cleaned at least once a year to prevent mold and odors in our humid climate.
Is a mini-split a good option for an older home?
Often, yes. Many older homes in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Hampton have no ductwork or very little attic space. A mini-split adds heating and cooling without opening walls for new ducts.
